Start Here: The New Believer’s Path

A plain-language beginning for a man who has trusted Christ and wants to learn how to follow Him.

You do not have to understand everything at once. Becoming a Christian is not graduating from life’s struggles. It is beginning a new life with Jesus Christ. God receives you because of what Christ has done, and He patiently teaches you to trust, obey, and become more like His Son.

1. Begin with Jesus and the gospel

God made us and has the rightful claim over our lives. Every person has sinned by rejecting His rule in thought, desire, word, and action. Sin separates us from God, and we cannot repair that separation by becoming religious or trying harder.

Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. He lived without sin, died on the cross in the place of sinners, and rose bodily from the dead. He offers forgiveness and new life as a gift. A person receives that gift by turning from sin and trusting Jesus—not his goodness, baptism, church attendance, or feelings.

If you have trusted Christ, keep returning to this truth: you are saved by His grace, not by your performance. Read John 3:16, Romans 3:23–26, Romans 5:6–11, 1 Corinthians 15:1–4, and Ephesians 2:8–10.

2. Understand what God has done for you

When you trust Christ, God forgives and declares you right with Him because of Jesus. He gives you spiritual life, adopts you into His family, places His Holy Spirit within you, and begins changing you. These are not rewards for advanced Christians; they belong to every true believer.

Your assurance rests first in Christ’s finished work and God’s promise. Feelings rise and fall. When you doubt, look again to Jesus, confess known sin, and examine whether your life shows a continuing desire to trust and follow Him. Growth may be uneven, but saving faith does not make peace with unbelief and sin.

3. Learn to read the Bible

The Bible is God’s trustworthy Word and the final authority for what Christians believe and how they live. Begin with the Gospel of John, then read Mark or Luke, Acts, and Romans. Read a manageable portion each day rather than rushing to finish chapters.

Notice who is speaking, what is happening, what comes before and after, and what the writer intended to communicate. First understand what the passage meant; then consider what it teaches you to believe, value, confess, or do. The Bible Study Methods section can help after this simple habit is established.

4. Learn to pray honestly

Prayer is speaking with God because Christ has brought you near. You do not need impressive language. Praise God for who He is, confess sin plainly, thank Him for His gifts, ask for what you need, pray for others, and submit your desires to His wisdom.

Jesus’ model prayer in Matthew 6:9–13 is a good pattern. Prayer is not a way to control God or prove spirituality. It is the dependent response of a child who trusts his Father. The Selected Prayers of the Bible section shows how believers prayed in joy, fear, grief, failure, danger, and hope.

5. Join a faithful local church

A Christian is not meant to grow alone. Find a church that clearly teaches the Bible, proclaims salvation by grace through faith in Christ, practices believer’s baptism, observes the Lord’s Supper, and is led by biblically qualified pastors.

Attend consistently. Get to know the pastor and other mature believers. Ask about membership and baptism. Let people know your story and your questions. A healthy church will help you worship, learn, serve, receive correction, carry burdens, and use your gifts for others.

Baptism does not save you; it is the public act by which a believer identifies with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. The Lord’s Supper does not repeat Christ’s sacrifice; it helps the church remember and proclaim the gospel together.

6. Expect growth, struggle, and repentance

Christians still face temptation and sometimes fall into sin. That does not make sin harmless, and it does not mean every struggle proves you are unsaved. God’s Spirit is at work teaching believers to recognize sin, confess it, resist it, and practice a new way of living.

Repentance is more than feeling bad. It is agreeing with God, turning from sin, receiving His forgiveness, and taking concrete steps toward obedience. Remove easy access to temptation, seek accountability, repair harm where possible, and return to Christ instead of hiding in shame.

7. Become a godly man

Godly manhood is not domination, toughness, income, or public importance. It is Christlike character expressed through courage, self-control, truth, sacrificial love, humility, responsibility, service, and protection of the vulnerable.

Begin with what God has already placed before you. Keep your word. Tell the truth. Work faithfully. Treat women with honor. Be present with your family. Admit wrong without blaming. Serve without needing recognition. Learn from older believers and encourage younger men. These actions do not earn salvation; they are fruit produced as grace reshapes your life.

8. Handle relationships in a Christian way

Following Christ changes the way a man listens, speaks, forgives, handles anger, uses authority, responds to criticism, and treats people who cannot benefit him. Reconciliation requires truth and humility, but it does not require pretending that abuse or danger is acceptable.

Ask forgiveness when you have sinned. Forgive as God gives grace, while allowing wise boundaries and lawful consequences when needed. Marriage, fatherhood, friendship, work, and care for aging parents each require patient presence rather than slogans. The relationship studies in this app develop these responsibilities.

9. Learn to tell others about Christ

You do not need to win arguments or know every answer. Explain simply who Jesus is, why He died and rose, and how you came to trust Him. Invite the person to read a Gospel with you. If you do not know an answer, say so honestly and look for it together.

Share the gospel with respect and clarity. Do not manipulate emotions or pressure someone into repeating words he does not understand. Salvation is God’s work; your calling is to speak truth, love the person, and trust the Holy Spirit.

10. Know when to ask for help

Strong men ask for help before a crisis becomes destruction. Bring spiritual questions and ordinary struggles to a faithful pastor and mature Christian brothers. Serious depression, suicidal thinking, addiction, abuse, violence, severe anxiety, or mental and physical illness may also require qualified professional or emergency care.

Seeking appropriate help is not a failure of faith. God often cares for people through churches, physicians, counselors, recovery ministries, family, and public safety services. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. In the United States, call or text 988 for a suicide, mental-health, or substance-use crisis.

Your next step: Begin with the Gospel of John, pray honestly each day, and connect with a faithful local church. Then use the rest of The Christian Men’s Table as a library—not a race. Choose the section that addresses your present need and keep bringing every lesson back to Jesus Christ and Scripture.

Selected Prayers of the Bible

Forty-eight major prayer episodes—intercessions, confessions, petitions, thanksgivings, laments, and praises—presented as pastoral biblical studies. Related prayers within one episode are treated together so their biblical argument remains intact.

What biblical prayer teaches: Prayer is the covenant response of dependent people to the living God. It includes adoration, confession, thanksgiving, lament, petition, intercession, submission, and praise, and it reaches the Father through the mediation of Jesus Christ.

Bible Study Methods: Guided Studies

Ten dependable methods are explained step by step and demonstrated with the same passage so readers can compare how each approach works.

Shared example: 1 Corinthians 13:4–8a
Guardrail for every method: A method is a tool, not an authority. The Holy Spirit illumines the meaning He inspired in Scripture; He does not give private meanings that contradict the text. Personal application comes after sound interpretation, and no acronym or devotional impression should replace careful reading of the passage in its literary, historical, and biblical context.

Jesus ChristJesus is fully God and fully man, born of a virgin, sinless, crucified for sinners, bodily raised, reigning, and coming again.
SalvationSalvation is entirely by God’s grace through repentance and personal faith in Jesus Christ, not by human merit or religious works.
The Holy SpiritThe Spirit convicts, regenerates, indwells, seals, equips, and progressively sanctifies every believer.
The ChurchA New Testament church is a local congregation of baptized believers, observing believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Supper and carrying out Christ’s Great Commission.

Articles and study methods should always be tested by Scripture read in context. Where this app’s wording is unclear or incomplete, Scripture—not the app—remains the final authority.

Steve Baley is a Christian author, Bible teacher, and licensed preacher whose ministry has been shaped by decades of leadership, service, and discipleship. He holds a Diploma in Biblical Studies, along with degrees in social science, health sciences, and business administration.

A retired registered nurse and lieutenant colonel in the Mississippi Air National Guard, Steve brings to his writing the perspective of a caregiver, military leader, minister, and mentor. He has preached and taught in Baptist churches, led men’s Bible studies, served in local church and associational ministry, and participated in Christian missions in Africa.

Through The Christian Men’s Table, Steve seeks to help men apply biblical truth to faith, character, marriage, fatherhood, work, leadership, suffering, and friendship. His aim is not to present himself as the standard, but to direct men to the authority of Scripture, the saving grace of Jesus Christ, the transforming work of the Holy Spirit, and the strength of faithful Christian brotherhood.
